The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance examination conducted annually for admission into Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) law programmes offered by National Law Universities (NLUs) and several other reputed law colleges across India.
CLAT is the most widely accepted and competitive law entrance exam in India and serves as the primary gateway to top law schools and prestigious legal careers.
What is CLAT?
CLAT is a centralized entrance test designed to ensure transparent, merit-based admission to law programmes.
The exam evaluates a student’s reading ability, logical thinking, legal aptitude, quantitative skills, and awareness of current affairs, rather than rote memorization.
The examination is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities, which comprises India’s leading law universities.

Undergraduate Law Programmes (After Class 12)
CLAT UG offers admission to 5-Year Integrated Law Courses, including:
BA LL.B. (Hons.)
BBA LL.B.
B.Com LL.B.
B.Sc LL.B.
BSW LL.B.
These programmes allow students to begin their law education immediately after Class 12, combining graduation and law into a single degree.
CLAT Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for CLAT UG, a candidate must:
- Have passed Class 12 or equivalent from a recognized board
- Secure minimum aggregate marks:
- 45%–General/OBC/PwD/NRI/OCI/PIO
- 40%–SC/ST
- Students appearing for Class 12 are also eligible
- No upper age limit
CLAT Exam Pattern
1. Mode: Offline (Pen & Paper Based)
2. Duration: 2 Hours (120 Minutes)
3. Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
4. Total Questions: 120
5. Marking Scheme:
- +1 for each correct answer
- –0.25 for each incorrect answer
- No negative marking for unattempted questions
